TRAVEL
Field Notes · 4 min read
The Great Wall of China winds across the mountains north of Beijing. Its best-known sections were built during the Ming dynasty, between 1368 and 1644.
Astronauts say the wall is easy to spot from the Moon with the naked eye. Pack water and good shoes: the steps are steeper than they look.
Counting all of its branches, the wall stretches for more than 21,000 kilometres. You will walk only a tiny part of it.

03 / WHAT IT IS
Falsify is a Chrome extension that fact-checks what you read and watch. Open an article, or a video on YouTube, TikTok or Instagram Reels, and it picks out the claims worth checking, looks each one up on Google, and underlines it right where it sits: green for true, red for false, orange where good sources disagree. On an average page, it settles about 17 claims.
Click an underline to see the exact sentence it was judged against and the website it came from. When it can’t find solid evidence either way, it stays quiet, so every underline you see is backed by a source you can read for yourself.
THE OTHER SIDE OF THE STORY
It picks out the sentences that state something checkable: numbers, dates, records, who did what.
Each claim is looked up on Google, and Falsify reads the pages that come back, along with Wikipedia.
Every verdict quotes the sentence it was judged on and names the website. Click it to open that page, at that line where the site allows it.
Every claim gets a truth score from 0 to 100, and its underline gets darker the stronger the evidence. The whole page gets an integrity score: the average truth score of every claim it could check.
04 / WHY IT MATTERS
More than half of the 100 most popular mental-health videos on TikTok contain misinformation. The Guardian, 2025
1 in 3 of the most-shared cancer articles on social media contain misinformation, and they out-engage the accurate ones. Journal of the National Cancer Institute, 2021
Half of Americans believed at least one viral false claim last June. Only 7% caught all three. NewsGuard, 2025
72% of people across 25 countries say false information online is a major threat. Pew Research Center, 2025
8.7 million shares and reactions went to the top fake stories on Facebook before the 2016 US election, beating the top real news (7.4 million). BuzzFeed News, 2016
THE OTHER SIDE OF THE STORY
No account needed: 3 page checks, 2 highlights and 3 minutes of video a day. Every check costs us real money, so the free plan runs at a loss. We keep it because checking the facts shouldn’t depend on paying.
Corrections rarely catch up with the original post.
Confident writing is easy to produce, so confidence is no longer a sign of accuracy.
Every verdict quotes the exact sentence it was judged on and names the website, so you can read it yourself.
Each verdict comes with a short explanation that adds extra information and the background the original left out.
05 / THE MARGIN NOTES
Yes. The Falsify extension does nothing until you start a check: it doesn’t read or send anything from the pages you visit in the background. Here’s what we collect:
We don’t track your clicks, scrolling or typing. Payments go through Stripe, so we never see your card details. We don’t sell your data or use it for advertising.
No. The Falsify Chrome extension works without an account. You only need to sign in with Google if you want to keep a history of your checks or buy a plan.
Yes. Sign in and open History from the Falsify extension’s menu to reopen a past check, with its underlines restored right where they were on the page.
No. The Falsify extension doesn’t take sides or rate news sites. It looks each claim up on Google and judges it only against what the sources say. Every verdict shows the exact sentence it relied on and the website it came from, so you can check its work yourself.
You do. The Falsify extension tells you whether it thinks a claim is true or false, but it never asks you to take its word for it. Every verdict shows the exact sentence it was judged on and the website it came from, so you can check everything yourself and make up your own mind.
A full page check takes about 14 seconds on average. In that time, the Falsify extension finds the claims on the page, searches Google for each one, reads the sources it finds and checks every claim against them. Underlines appear as each claim is settled, so you can start reading the results right away.
No. Chrome only runs extensions on computers, so the Falsify Chrome extension works on Windows, Mac, Linux and Chromebooks, but not on phones or tablets.
Plenty. Because the Falsify extension looks up every claim on the page, it doubles as a research tool:
BEFORE YOU GO
Falsify is independent, and every check costs us real money in searches and AI. The free plan runs at a loss. For Falsify to keep going, it has to earn enough to pay for itself, and that mostly comes down to people like you.
A few honest words on the Chrome Web Store help more people find Falsify than anything else we can do.
